The University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University will present “The Farewells: Photographs by Alberto Martí,” from Thursday, Oct. 24 through Friday, Dec. 13 in the Schmidt Center Gallery Public Space, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The exhibition includes 51 photographs taken by Alberto Marti, documenting the mass exodus of the Galicians from Northern Spain to the Americas between 1957 and 1963. There will be an opening reception on Monday, Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m. featuring a lecture with Benita Sampedro Vizcaya, Ph.D. of Hofstra University. The lecture and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The exhibition was inaugurated at New York’s Ellis Island in February 2019 and is sponsored at FAU by the Council for Galician Culture and the Xunta de Galicia(Regional Government of Galicia), through the Galician Center of Image Arts, and the Americas Initiative at FAU.

“The Farewells: Photographs by Alberto Martí” features anonymous people and their personal experiences, capturing a common reality shared by thousands of Galician families. The Galician’s emigration away from their homeland gave rise to the most beautiful poems and agonizing love letters, and also to the most sorrowful expression, reflected in a white handkerchief waving in the wind while the ship or train begins to part with their loved ones on board. The exhibition is structured around three sections: “The Departure,” “The Return,” and “The Portuguese Passenger Ship Santa Maria.”

Martí started working for a local photographer at an early age and eventually took over the business in 1953. His photojournalist passion led him to combine his job with a regular collaboration with the daily newspaper 'La Voz de Galicia' for more than 50 years. He received several awards, including the Spain National Photography Award in 1960.
