An increasing number of low-income and first-generation students are enrolling in college, and these students face multiple challenges on the road to their degree, including lack of support systems, financial struggles, and difficulty navigating university policies, procedures and expectations — often called the "hidden curriculum."
At Florida Atlantic University, 39 percent of undergraduates are designated as low income, and first-generation students make up one-third of our student body. We developed a number of strategies and resources to help these students navigate the hidden curriculum, stay in school and graduate on time. This resulted in the nation’s fastest jump in graduation rates with zero equity gaps based on race, ethnicity or family income.
Recognized as a national a leader in social mobility, Florida Atlantic specializes in lifting up traditionally underserved students. By delivering equitable outcomes in achieving scholastic, and ultimately, career success, we are helping to create generational change.
At this virtual forum, experts will discuss the challenges colleges face in delivering equitable outcomes and strategies to accelerate social mobility. Hear from Daniel Meeroff, Ph.D., dean of undergraduate studies at Florida Atlantic, about how the university’s transformational experiences for low-income and first-generation students are ensuring success for all.
