All web sites have a background. This site has a plain white background. Any plain color can be used or a textured background can be chosen. Drop shadows used in the image above do not work with textured backgrounds. Also a "busy" background will make it difficult to read the text. Many sites use a plain dark colored background, such as black, with a light or white text. Depending on the user's system, browser and printer, if the site is printed, the colored background may not print, making the text very light or nonexistent on paper.
Border backgrounds have a border along the left with a contrasting color or texture for the main body. Backgrounds consist of a small image that repeats itself until the page is full. A border background image is usually the width of the screen and very narrow while a tile background may be 2"x2" meaning all edges must match up with the adjacent edge.
