Notes:
Acetylcholine=muscle action, learning & memory (deteriorated in Alzheimer’s disease).
Dopamine=movement, learning, attention and emotion (excess linked with schizophrenia; treatment of Parkinson’s with L-dopa).
Norepinephrine=alertness & arousal
Serotonin=mood, hunger, sleep & arousal (low levels associated with depression—treated with Prozac)
Glutamate & GABA do the grunt work of the synaptic communication; these 2 have the information transmitting effects while the others (above) are more modulators than communicators.
GABA=inhibitory—thought to be linked with eating and sleep disorders.
