This is one of most studied and best understood neurotransmitters.
All muscular movement is accomplished via release of ACh
ACh also in Autonomic NS (parasympathetic branch)
Axons and terminal buttons of ACh neurons are distributed widely throughout the brain.
ACh in the pons=REM sleep; basal forebrain=activate cerebral cortex & facilitate (perceptual) learning ; medial septum control electrical rhythms of hippocampus (helps with memories).
Drugs that deactivate AChE are used as: insecticides or medically as in treatment of weak skeletal muscles (neostigmine)
