Notes:
An “exogenous” chemical that significantly alters the function of certain bodily cells when taken in relatively low doses
Drug=chemical produced outside of the body that is not needed for normal functioning & that @ low dose significantly alters the cells in the NS.
Vs. Meds or medicine=chemicals from a druggist/pharmacist used to treat some ailment.
Drugs have effects, physiological or behavioral (e.g. reduced sensitivity to pain, sedation, euphoria)
and drugs have sites of action, molecules the drugs interact with to produce the effects.
Chemical messengers made by the body=neurotransmitters (NT), neuromodulators, or hormones; may have similar effects to drugs or be altered by drugs.
