HIV Testing

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the immune system and can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV can be transmitted through blood, pre-seminal fluid, semen, rectal fluids, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. One of the most common routes of HIV transmission is through unprotected sexual intercourse with a partner infected with HIV.

More than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection. About 1 in 4 new HIV infections occur among youth ages 13 to 24. Many of them do not know they are infected, are not getting treated, and can unknowingly transmit the virus to others.
If you choose to be sexually active it is important to practice safer sex behaviors, such as using external (male) condoms, internal (female) condoms, and dental dams. These items are available free of charge at Owls Care Health Promotion. It is also crucial to get tested for HIV and STIs annually or in between partners. Follow the link below to learn more about STI testing options that are available here on campus.
Student Health Services

It is important to talk to one’s sexual partner before engaging in any kind of sexual activity. For a safer sexual experience, Owls Care Health Promotion encourages students to communicate openly and honestly with their sexual partners about their sexual history, testing status, and preferred method of protection.

Student Health Services (SHS)

Student Health Services offers appointments with qualified healthcare providers who can evaluate your personal health status and recommend appropriate testing for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The HIV test at SHS is a highly-accurate blood test that is able to detect infection in as little as 10 days after exposure. Charges that may apply for your visit can be filed to your health insurance if applicable. Services at SHS are available to all students, regardless of insurance coverage. Talk to the SHS staff at the time of your visit about costs of tests that may be indicted for your health.

To schedule an appointment, go to myhealth.fau.edu or call 561-297-3512.
