About Real ID

After 2014, federal agencies will no longer accept a driver license or ID card unless it is REAL ID compliant. Therefore, in order to board commercial flights or enter federal facilities you must have a REAL ID issued driver license. Your current Florida license or ID card will continue to be valid as identification for federal purposes until:

  • December 1, 2014 for individuals born AFTER December 1, 1964.

  • December 1, 2017 for individuals born BEFORE December 1, 1964.

The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 set new standards for the issuance of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards. REAL ID was established by the Department of Homeland Security in response to the 9/11 Commission recommendation that the U.S. improve its system for issuing identification documents.

Why Change?

The goal of REAL ID is to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses in order to help fight terrorism and reduce fraud. As a result, there are new identification requirements for obtaining a REAL ID compliant driver license or identification card.
