Florida Immersion Trips
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."
-John Quincy Adams
Mission Statement:
Florida Immersion Trips engage students in important social issues through service trips, leadership development, education, and reflection. Florida Immersion Trips aim to develop a community of active and engaged leaders who are committed to positive sustainable change.
Purpose:
Florida Immersion Trips seek to engage students in direct service and leadership throughout the state of Florida, both as a means of improving conditions for citizens of the state of Florida and as a means of encouraging students to become active citizens and leaders.
Role of the Participant:
Florida Immersion Trips (FIT) offer the opportunity for students to engage in service and act as emerging leaders outside of their University community. Students will learn about a particular issue and create lasting friendships with their fellow trip members. Although participation in an F.I.T. trip is very rewarding, it also requires commitment and dedication from all involved.
Participants are required to attend a pre-trip orientation where they will get to know their fellow trip members and become educated about their upcoming trip. One student Site Leader will serve as the trip's guide and help staff members from WCCES and SIL throughout the trip.
All participants must be a full-time or part-time Florida Atlantic University studentStudents must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA
Students must be in good disciplinary standing with the University
Conduct and grade checks are completed at the time of application. Students who fail to maintain the minimum GPA or fail to remain in good disciplinary standing prior to the trip will not be allowed to participate in F.I.T.
Agenda:
Orientation: All participants are required to attend a pre-service orientation.Orientation will occur the week of the trip and will last approximately one hour. Orientation will cover expectations of participants, weekend schedule, a service advocacy piece to educate participants on the issue, and a leadership training.
Trip: Participants will then partake in a weekend long immersion starting Friday afternoon and ending Sunday afternoon.
End of semester FIT reorientation: All participants are requested to attend the end of semester FIT reorientation as a way of coming back together with your trip participants, meeting participants from other trips, and sharing what you've done since your return.
