Planning for 2014's National Day on Writing celebration will soon be underway!  Please  contact Julianne Curran at   if you have ideas or would like to get involved!

2013's event took place on Thursday, October 17th.  Daytime activities were held in the Social Science Building (SO) Rotunda from 10:30-2:00.  Some activities included Mad Libs, "Words as Art" activities, and activities that raised awareness about how words can give people freedom of expression.

The evening reading by poet and essayist Julie Marie Wade and corresponding book signing and reception were be held at 6:00 outside the University Center for Excellence in Writing located inside the Center for Teaching and Learning in General Classroom Building South, GS 215.

In addition, this year's evening program welcomed the local winner of Office Depot's "Dream UP" contest, which inspires middle school students to focus on future careers.  Before the reading, the winner met with FAU faculty mentors and got feedback on some of her writing.  More information on the "Dream UP" contest winners can be found here

The 2012 recognition of the National Day on Writing was a great success and some really fun activities took place on the Traditions Plaza outside of the bookstore!

Some of the activities included:

  • Madlibs -- some really creative versions of songs, Shakespeare and Harry Potter excerpts, and "personal ads" were made!

  • 6 word stories -- Some samples: "Still lost on road less traveled;" "I love my girlfriend...and bacon;" "Met online; love before first sight"

  • Newspaper "blackout" poetry (words are crossed out of newspaper articles to make up a new story): "Two are now against a group and causes confusion." "Two people buried like a pancake authorities said, screaming suddenly 'Oh my God! The whole place shook' in another collapse."

  • Apples to Apples personality quiz

Special thanks to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Department of English, the University Center for Excellence in Writing, and the student volunteers from  Coastlines magazine, the English Club, the English Graduate Student Society, Sigma Tau Delta, and everyone who stopped by for some fun!
