Safe Zone Statement of Purpose
The mission of Florida Atlantic University Safe Zone is to provide a place where human rights are valued and where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students will find an understanding, supportive, and trustworthy individual who is there to listen and who will provide accurate information and referrals.
An individual who displays the Safe Zone symbol is:
- One who will be understanding, supportive and trustworthy if a LGBT student or colleague needs help, advice, or just someone with whom they can talk to.
- One who avoids heterosexist assumptions, confronts homophobia and uses inclusive language.
- One who believes that our campus is enriched by the diversity of LGBT people.
Many colleges and universities in North America have implemented "safe" programs on their campuses. A Safe Zone Ally is open to questions from and about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and their issues.
The Purpose of Safe Zone is to:
- Increase awareness
- Increase a sense of safety
- Increase coalition building
- Foster community and connection
- To encourage mentoring
- Increase inclusion
- Increase visibility of LGBT persons and issues
- Provides support for LGBT persons and allies
- Support existing community and campus structures
By participating in the Safe Zone program, the individual who displays the Safe Zone symbol pledges that their Safe Zone is a place where lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people and their allies may feel comfortable and safe in a confidential environment; express any issues and concerns in an atmosphere of acceptance and support; access informational and educational resources includign: organizations, phone numbers, websites and books. On-going trainings are conducted campus wide to become a Safe Zone member.
