The following scholarships are available to undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre and Dance:
The University Patron Freshman Scholarshipis a one-year award offered to theatre majors who meet the Department requirements.
The Esther Boyer Griswold University Scholarship is available to either current or incoming undergraduates who have a 3.2 departmental G.P.A. and are registered as full-time students (12 credit hour load). Scholarships are available for a maximum of eight semesters of study. Candidates must demonstrate substantial participation and excellence in the department production program. Scholarship continuation will be evaluated each year. Award of scholarship will be based on a one-page (400-word) essay in which the scholarship recipient will describe his or her past involvement and accomplishments, and commitment to
the future growth and development of the Department.
Esther Boyer Griswold Performing Arts Scholarship is a one-time $5,000 cash award given by the Department of Theatre and Dance every other year to a graduating senior or recent graduate from the Department. The applicant must have a 3.25 G.P.A. for the last 60 hours of coursework, with a 3.0 G.P.A. in all major courses. Interested students must submit a resume/portfolio and a detailed statement concerning plans for use of the award to the Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
Joseph Conaway Undergraduate Scholarship Fund
- Saul Edelman Award in Theatre is an award of $500 for an undergraduate student, based upon recognized excellence in theatre. Candidates must have an overall G.P.A. of 3.5 or above and at least one a support letter from a faculty member in the Department of Theatre and Dance.
Joshua Logan Graduate Assistantship - established by Charles and Dorothy Schmidt to honor the memory of Joshua Logan, distinguished American director and charter professor of the Eminent Scholar Chair in Performing Arts at FAU. The recipient must pass an audition and interview with the theatre faculty. Assigned duties might include assisting the Eminent Scholar, teaching, working in various production shops, or publicity. Interested persons must submit transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a resume/portfolio to the Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. There is a tuition waiver in addition to the assistantship. For further information, please contact the Department.
The Joseph Conaway Endowment is held by the Department Chair and is used to support various Departmental programs, including Graduate Assistantships.
Each year numerous graduate assistantships are awarded to individuals who show promise in the area of theatre. Passing an audition, interview, and/or portfolio review are also required. The assistantships range in value and include the cost of tuition as well as a stipend for living expenses. There is also a possibility to qualify for a summer assistantship and tuition waiver. Students are required, as part of their assistantships, to complete 20 hours of work per week in the Department, in addition to coursework. Duties may include classroom teaching, assistant teaching, office work, publicity work, technical and design support work, acting, directing, stage managing, and production crews. Interested persons should submit a transcript, resume, and three letters of recommendation to the Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
