ACT Preparation
The ACT is a timed test, and there are 215 questions on the ACT, usually getting more difficult as you progress through each section. The test is made up of four individual tests, each of which is designed to measure academic achievement in a major area: English, mathematics, reading and natural sciences. The ACT also includes an optional writing test.
- The test is about three hours long.
- English - 45 minutes, 75 questions
- Math - 60 minutes, 60 questions
- Reading - 35 minutes, 40 questions
- Science - 35 minutes, 40 questions
- Writing - 1 prompt, 30 minutes
FAU Test Prep has developed two structured test preparation classes that will help you with all three aspects of the tests—ACT Math & Science and ACT Verbal which includes English and Reading.

ACT MATH & SCIENCE
In the Mathematics Test, three subscores are based on six content areas:
pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry and trigonometry. The content of the Science Test includes biology, chemistry, physics and the Earth/space sciences (for example, geology, astronomy, and meteorology). Advanced knowledge in these subjects is not required, but background knowledge acquired in general, introductory science courses is needed to answer some of the questions. The ACT Math & Science course will cover all sections of the math portion of the test.

Reading
The Reading Test is based on four types of reading selections: social studies, natural sciences, prose fiction and humanities. Specifically, questions will ask you to use referring and reasoning skills to:
- determine main ideas
- locate and interpret significant details
- understand sequences of events
- make comparisons
- comprehend cause-effect relationships
- determine the meaning of context-dependent words, phrases and statements
- draw generalizations
- analyze the author's or narrator's voice and method
Writing
The test consists of one writing prompt that will define an issue and describe two points of view on that issue. You are asked to respond to a question about your position on the issue described in the writing prompt. In doing so, you may adopt one or the other of the perspectives described in the prompt, or you may present a different point of view on the issue. Your score will not be affected by the point of view you take on the issue.
