Health Insurance for International Students

The State of Florida and FAU require that all international students maintain health insurance coverage to help defray the costs of catastrophic medical care. Students will not be permitted to register until they have complied with the insurance requirements.  A “Major Medical” (MM) hold will be placed on each student’s registration status until proof of adequate insurance is presented.

Annual insurance is required for 52 continuous weeks beginning on a specified date each August. New and returning students who enter the University for the spring or summer terms must have prepaid or non-cancelable and continuous coverage through the specified date each August.

A University-approved policy is available for purchase on campus during specified hours.  To purchase the University-approved policy CLICK HEREThe original receipt of purchase must be presented to the Office of International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) to remove the MM hold.

Students may also purchase alternate insurance policies; provided, however, that such alternate policies comply with the University’s requirements.  To confirm compliance, students should have the insurance company and/or their agent complete the ALTERNATE INSURANCE COMPLIANCE FORM and fax it directly to the ISSS.  The fax number is 561-297-2446.  If the alternate policy complies with the University’s requirements, the MM hold will be lifted upon proof of purchase of insurance.

Please allow sufficient time for the insurance company to respond. If a policy does not comply with the University’s requirements, the individual student will NOT be cleared to register until that student obtains appropriate insurance.  In such case, the student may return to his or her proposed insurance carrier to inquire about a revised policy, consider other alternate policies or carriers or purchase the University-approved policy referenced above.

In compliance with FAU, State of Florida and United States Custom and Immigration Enforcement requirements, failure to maintain the required insurance will result in cancellation of all classes without a refund. All J-visa exchange visitors including students, scholars and their dependents who fail to maintain the required insurance for the specified period will be dismissed from FAU’s Exchange Visitor Program.
