Do you think you or someone you know may have an alcohol or drug problem?

If you're not sure whether your drug or alcohol use or someone else's drug or alcohol use is beginning to get a bit out of hand, you might want to ask yourself a few questions...

  1. When you drink or use drugs, do you need to use more to get you drunk or high than it used to?
  2. Do you ever drink or use more than you intended to?
  3. Do you make sure you have a supply of drugs or always keep a bottle on hand?
  4. Do you have blackouts - forget what you have done or said, or "lose time" after drinking or using?
  5. Do you ever drink or use drugs in the morning?
  6. Do you ever find yourself craving for a drink or drug to calm down or steady yourself?
  7. Do you ever drink when taking prescription medications which advise against drinking alcohol?
  8. Have you ever gone to work or school drunk or high?
  9. Do you have a history of relationship with addicts or alcoholics?

  10. Do you find yourself using alcohol or drugs to reduce anxiety, help you sleep, or because you are lonely?

  13. Do you conceal your use from family, friends, therapists or loved ones, or "edit" stories involving your drinking or using?
  14. Do you ever drink or use alone?
  15. Do you do or say things you later regret when drinking or using?
  16. Have you ever had a DUI, driven drunk, or had a drug or alcohol related accident or injury?
  17. Have you ever thought about or tried to cut down on the amount of drugs or alcohol you consume?
  18. Do you switch from one substance to another, or change drinks in an effort to regain control?
  19. Do you believe you're not an addict because your drug of choice is legal or prescribed?
  20. Do you have a favorite drink or drug?
  21. Do you think a lot about drugs and drug use?
  22. Do you plan your day to make sure you can use drugs?
  23. Do you feel irritable or anxious if you don't use drugs?
  24. Do you miss your favorite drug if you don't use it for a while?
  25. Have you ever felt guilty about your drug or alcohol use?
  • If you answered yes to any of these questions you may want to take a closer look at your using and drinking patterns.
  • If you answered yes to two of the questions, moderating your drinking or use would be a good idea.
  • If you answered yes to three or more of the questions, you would be well advised to seek professional help.
