The Social Justice Banner

With approximately 69 FAU social work students and faculty attending Lobby Day in Tallahassee this year, the School of Social Work, Acolyte, Phi Alpha, and SWEAT can be very proud of all they accomplished. Our students were well educated and prepared, professional, respectful, assertive, and creative. Among the creative contributions that FAU made to Lobby Day was the following song, presented to about 800 social work students from across the state, assembled for a rally on the steps of the old Capitol. Thanks to SWEAT President Sherry Satchell and everyone else who participated.

National Crime Victim’s Rights Week

April 18-24, 2010 was National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, a time for all Americans to learn about victimization, reflect on the cost of crime to our society, and promote laws, policies and programs to help victims of crime rebuild their lives.

Eric H. Holder Jr., Attorney General, Washington D.C., stated, “This year’s theme evokes powerful memories of a time when victim compensation and support services were not available to those harmed by crime…Victims and advocates demanded fairness, dignity and respect, and the time has come to acknowledge the progress made toward realizing these ideals.”

Beginning Monday, April 19, the Palm Beach County Victims’ Rights Coalition hosted a week of training workshops and special ceremonies to promote awareness of the rights of victims and to encourage public interest in justice for victims.

The School of Social Work and the department of Criminology and Criminal Justice hosted several events honoring victim’s rights week.  Certified Rape Crisis Advocates and Sexual Assault Awareness Resource tables were set up on the Boca and Jupiter campuses and local victim advocates were present to speak with students on both campuses.  Additionally,  students from the School of Social Work rode around in golf carts handing out resource bags to students.

We were fortunate to have a distinguished panel of guest speakers come to campus on Tuesday, April 19th to discuss current issues with students.  Over 40 students attended the panel discussion with community professionals:

  • Daliah Weiss - State Attorney’s Chief of the Sexual Violence Unit
  • Detective Scott Hanley - Boca Police Department
  • Angie Gifford - FAU Victim Services
  • Sandy Reynolds - Palm Beach County Victim Services Senior Program Coordinator
  • Dr.  Joan Pennell - Professor of Social Work and Director of the Center for Family and Community Engagement at North Carolina State University. The Center is nationally and internationally known for its work on family-centered meetings.
