There are three mandatory requirements to complete Animal Care and Use Training:

• CITI on-line training (see full instructions below)
• Meet to review protocol requirements and one-on-one training with the Attending Veterinarian
• Meet and train with the facilities manager

Florida Atlantic University's IACUC conducts on-line training/certification through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website: www.citiprogram.org. All certification course work, unless specifically indicated, is to be completed using the CITI website. All personnel working with animals must complete the CITI training.

Initially you must register to create your own username and password and gain access to the site. Follow the directions on the web site, selecting "Florida Atlantic University" from the Participating Institutions drop down list on Step 1. Once you receive access you will be presented with a series of questions or options to enable you to enroll in the Learner Group appropriate to your interests or your role in lab animal welfare and research. Please follow the CITI instructions screen shots are provided to assist you. Once the course is completed, print a certificate. A printout of this certificate must be included when you meet with the Attending Veterinarian.

Certification in species specific modules are required if you are working hands-on with animals. In addition, anyone performing survival surgery on a vertebrate species is required to complete the CITI Aseptic Surgery module.

• Registering
  
  1. Go to www.citiprogram.org
  2. As a new user, click on register here to register for the training course
  3. For question number one select Florida Atlantic University from the participating institutions and click submit. Note: It is important to select FAU from this list; each institution has customized the training modules as appropriate for their needs.
  4. Create a unique username, password, security question and answer.
  5. Enter the information requested.

  1. #1 Human Subjects Course Enrollment - If you are in CITI to complete IRB training choose which type of research you are engaged in. Skip the other course enrollment categories if not applicable.
  2. #2 Responsible Conduct of Research If you are in CITI to complete RCR training, choose which discipline best describes your program. Skip the other course enrollment categories if not applicable.
  3. #3 and #4 Health Information Privacy and Security and Good Clinical Practice Courses these are very specific training modules applicable to conducting clinical trials.
  4. #5 IACUC Lab Animal Welfare Course Enrollment Choose your course:
     
     1. Working with the IACUC - ALL Investigators/researchers will need to complete this course.
     2. Essentials for IACUC Members
     3. Courses applicable to your research (i.e. if you will be performing aseptic surgery with mice, please select Aseptic Surgery , Working with Mice in Research Settings , and Post-procedure Care of Mice and Rats in Research: Reducing Pain ).
     4. Learner Group appropriate to your interests or your role in Animal Welfare. You will be presented with a series of questions or options to enable you to enroll in this section.
     5. Submit your courses to complete the registration process.
  5. You may affiliate with another institution. The software will sum the requirements of both institutions so that you do not need to retake modules common to the requirements of both institutions.
  6. Main Menu. This page lists the courses you have chosen. The Main Menu also provides a number of Course Utilities designed to help you.
  7. You may "Add a course or update your learner groups". This link will take you to the enrollment questions and permit you to change your "Learner Group" by providing new responses to the enrollment questions.
  8. The red link "Enter or Re-Enter" will permit you to Begin/Continue the Course.
  9. Please complete the Integrity Assurance module presented at the top. The system will allow you to start taking the courses after completing it.
  10. Complete the required modules and associated quizzes.
  11. Complete any "Elective" modules.
• After Completing Your Lab Animal Course Training
  1. Print your completion certificate to present to the University Attending Veterinarian, Dr. Sylvia Gografe.
  2. You must meet with the Veterinarian to discuss your completed training as well as additional training applicable to your research including necessary facilities training.
  3. Provide your certificate along with your protocol application/amendment when meeting with the Veterinarian.
  4. Submit your certificate along with your protocol application/amendment to the IACUC for review.
