Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation
Available Grants The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) funds drug discovery research programs from domestic and international investigators in academia and biotechnology companies. As a biomedical venture philanthropy, ADDF seeks to fill the critical translational funding gap between basic research and later stage drug development. Two research funding opportunities currently are available.

Proposals for the Frontotemporal Dementia Drug Discovery Program are due Oct 1. The award seeks to accelerate and support drug discovery for FTD and related dementias. Several examples of eligible projects are provided in the brief RFP. More information is available at: http://www.alzdiscovery.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2009-addf-aftd-ftd-rfp.pdf.

Biophotonic, Advanced Imaging, and Sensing

National Science Foundation - Biophotonic, Advanced Imaging, and Sensing for Human Health (BISH)
The NSF's Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environment, and Transport Systems program "Biophotonic, Advanced Imaging, and Sensing for Human Health (BISH)" supports innovative basic research in photonics, imaging, and sensing that is very fundamental in science and engineering and is needed to lay the foundation for new technologies beyond those that are mature and ready for application in medical diagnostics and therapies (PD 10-7236). Developing molecularly specific sensing (molecular photonics), imaging, and monitoring systems with high sensitivity and resolution would be an enormous accomplishment with powerful applications to both biology and medicine. Low cost diagnostics will require novel integration of photonics, molecular biology, and material science. Complex biosensors capable of detecting and discriminating among large classes of biomolecules could be important not only to biology and medicine, but also to environmental sensing and homeland security.

The BISH program supports innovative research of biophotonic, imaging, and sensing technologies for applications in human health. Proposal Window: Feb. 1, 2010 to Mar. 3, 2010. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501025

Healthcare and Insurance Research

American Cancer Society - The Role of Healthcare and Insurance in Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment
The purpose of this program is to stimulate research on the effects of the US healthcare system structure and the role of insurance on access to screenings and treatment, particularly research using linked databases such as SEER, Medicare payment data, state data and NCHS data; other existing databases. Studies may be at the state, multi-state, or national levels, or otherwise involve large populations. Respondents should specifically describe how their results would generalize to the broader corresponding U.S. populations. The goal is to use new knowledge derived from these studies to inform policy development and enhance outcomes in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. The ACS is particularly interested in developing new knowledge specifically about the role played by insurance within the context of other factors, such as costs, capacity and personal characteristics, that affect outcomes in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. In particular, studies should explore these issues within the uninsured and underinsured populations, Medicaid, and types of private insurance (HMO, PPO, etc.). Grants may be for up to four years. Awards - up to $200,000 plus 20% indirect costs per year. Deadline: Oct. 15, 2009. Go to: http://a676.g.akamaitech.net/f/676/773/90m/images.m0.net/cm50content/19439/9218/
