National Science Foundation - Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement CCLI) -- Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
The Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program (NSF 09-529) seeks to improve the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education for all undergraduate students. It especially welcomes proposals that have the potential to transform undergraduate education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for all students. The program supports efforts to create, adapt, and disseminate new learning materials and teaching strategies to reflect advances both in STEM disciplines and in what is known about teaching and learning. It funds projects that develop faculty expertise, implement educational innovations, assess learning and evaluate innovations, prepare K-12 teachers, or conduct research on STEM teaching and learning. It also supports projects that further the work of the program itself, for example, synthesis and dissemination of findings across the program. The program supports projects representing different stages of development, ranging from small, exploratory investigations to large, comprehensive projects. Deadline: May 21, 2009. National Science Foundation - Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) in Engineering
This solicitation (NSF 09-533) aims at introducing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate engineering education. The focus of this year's competition is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to devices and systems and/or on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. Awards will be for $200K x two years.

Nanoscale engineering provides creative opportunities for invigorating undergraduate engineering education through new courses and research experiences. It blends engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, computer science, materials science, geology, behavioral and social sciences, and design. As such, it provides new opportunities for faculty collaboration, both in teaching and in research, that cross traditional disciplinary and departmental boundaries. Some examples of nanotechnology-based topics that can be introduced into the curriculum include scanning probe methods, devices using nanotubes, bottom-up and top-down syntheses of nanoscale materials, self-assembly, nanobiotechnology, environmental aspects of nanotechnology, applications of nanotechnology to information technology, properties and fundamental phenomena in nanoscale materials, computational methods for modeling nanoscale materials, nanoscale devices, nanoscale systems, design principles at nanoscale, and the societal, ethical, economic and environmental implications of nanotechnology. See http://www.nsf.gov/nano for additional examples.

NUE projects are intended to enable individuals, departments, programs, or campuses to integrate nanoscale engineering into their curricula. Integration could take the form of a new course or courses, or modification of existing courses so that a substantial portion of the course content is based on nanoscale engineering. Integration could include a module or modules in courses that focus on issues of environmental or social change and new developments in nanoscale engineering, or a new course or series of courses that include those focuses. Deadline: Apr. 29, 2009. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09533/nsf09533.html?govDel=USNSF_25

U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Wildlife Without Borders - Latin America and the Caribbean Program
The Wildlife Without Borders-Latin America and the Caribbean Program (WWB-LAC) funds projects designed to strengthen the ability of Latin American and Caribbean institutions to manage and conserve species, habitats and ecological processes for the benefit of the people of the Americas and the world. Of particular interest are projects that build the human and institutional capacity to effectively conserve and manage natural protected areas in Latin America and the Caribbean.Program objectives are: 1) To advance, through capacity building, the transition of protected areas from legally established but under-implemented “paper parks” to effectively managed landscapes, benefiting species of regional concern; and 2) To develop, strengthen and replicate high-quality conservation training programs that reach the priority audiences associated with protected areas. The priority audiences for the training supported by this Program include: Protected area managers and administrators; Protected area guards and rangers; Protected area outreach and education specialists; Community leaders (living in and around protected areas); Upper-level students (working on projects in and around protected areas); and Decision-makers who influence protected areas (including private landowners, legislators, and public officials).

Projects should take place in Latin America or the Caribbean, ideally in a recognized high priority ecosystem or ecoregion of biome, or a key location associated with flagship, endangered or migratory species of regional concern. If work is to be conducted outside that region, the proposal must explain why it is preferable that the project is implemented elsewhere. $50,000 is the maximum that can be requested. Deadline: Apr. 15, 2009. Funding No. WWBLAC09. Go to: http://www07.grants.gov/search/search.do?&mode=VIEW&flag2006=false&oppId=42853

Science & Engineering

Florida Dept. of Transportation - "Reinforced Concrete Pipe Cracks-Acceptance Criteria"
Current FDOT specifications reference ASTM standards for reinforced concrete pipe requirements. However, inspections of RC pipes after placement often reveal cracks that are the cause of contention between the FDOT and the contractor. The contractor typically claims that these cracks are not detrimental to performance because of their disappearance due to a phenomenon called autogenous healing. The objective of this project is to develop RC pipe crack acceptance criteria and prepare specifications. While studies confirm the validity of autogenous healing in specific situations, it is not clear what maximum crack size is mitigated by this process nor the influence of environmental and loading conditions on the healing process.
