Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) are intended to foster the early career development of postdoctoral scientists with backgrounds in the physical/ computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. The awards provide up to $500,000 in support over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of a future faculty appointment, presumably at a different institution. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering. Biogeochemistry of Wetlands Short Course in Gainesville - June 23-26, 2008
University of Florida, Gainesville, FL The objective of this course is to provide exclusive training to professionals on basic concepts involved in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and other contaminants in wetlands, as related to soil, water, and air quality. Who should attend? Participants interested in or actively involved in wetland management, water quality, restoration, and constructed wetlands. Each course topic involves basic concepts and its application and usefulness in addressing environmental ecological significance to wetland restoration, water quality, and other ecological functions. For each topic case studies from southeastern region will be used. Topics are: introduction, wetland community types, hydrologic processes, phyico-chemical characteristics of wetland soils, oxidation-reduction potential (redox potential), gas exchange between soil-plant-water system, organic matter decomposition and accretion, nitrogen processing capacity of wetlands, phosphorus assimilation capacity of wetlands, sulfur cycle-importance in coastal marshes and freshwater wetlands, metals, toxic organic compounds, transport processes, biogeochemical indicators for wetland assessment, field and laboratory demonstrations.
