National Endowment for the Humanities - New Grant Program to Support Digital Research and Training
The NEH Digital Humanities Initiative has announced Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities, a new grant program to support national or regional (multi-state) research and training programs on approaches in humanities computing. The program is designed to bring together humanities scholars, graduate students, computer scientists, and others to learn new tools and technologies and to foster relationships for future collaborations in the humanities. Partners and collaborators may be drawn from the private and public sectors and include appropriate specialists from within and outside the United States.  Possible topics and areas to be addressed might include: text encoding, electronic editing, and publishing; e-literature; textual analysis and text mining; immersive and virtual environments in multimedia research; 3-D imaging technology, including laser scanning; creativity, culture, and computing; digital image design; information aesthetics; computer gaming and the humanities; high performance or supercomputing and the humanities; and advanced Geographic Information Systems applications. Awards normally range from one to three years and from $50,000 to a maximum of $250,000 each. Deadline: April 9, 2008.  Go to http://www.neh.gov/.

National Science Foundation - "University Radio Observatories Program"  (NSF 08-543)
University Radio Observatories (UROs) serve as centers for focused scientific research and technical development in radio astronomy through the collaborative involvement of faculty, research engineers, and students. The $10 million URO program provides support for operations, technical enhancements, scientific investigations, and student training at university-based radio facilities. A primary function of funded University Radio Observatories is to provide focused research environments that foster hands-on student access to state-of-the-art radio astronomy instrumentation. UROs also serve the general astronomical community by providing open access to 30% - 50% of available telescope time. The emphasis of the program is to maintain a presence for radio astronomy in the university environment, in order to foster innovation and train upcoming generations of students in the field. UROs also provide research opportunities of scope and risk not typically available at the National Centers.  Facilities currently supported fully or partially include one millimeter-wavelength interferometer array, one submillimeter-wavelength single-dish telescope, and one millimeter-wavelength single-dish telescope, and one centimeter-wavelength array. The URO program provides funding for telescope operations and for equipment development at existing facilities, and may support construction of new facilities. It also provides partial or full salary support for research faculty, engineers, and technicians; partial summer salary for teaching faculty; and stipend support for both graduate and undergraduate students. Deadline: May 30, 2008. Go to: www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08543/nsf08543.htm

National Science Foundation - "Research to Aid Persons with Disabilities"
This NSF Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems program (PD 08-5342) supports research that will lead to the development of new technologies, devices, or software for persons with disabilities.  Research may be supported that is directed to the characterization, restoration, and/or substitution of human functional ability or cognition, or to the interaction of persons with disabilities and their environment.  Areas of particular recent interest are disability-related research in neuroscience/neuroengineering and rehabilitation robotics.

Undergraduate Engineering Design Projects are also supported, especially those that provide prototype "custom-designed" devices or software for persons with disabilities. The proposal must include a short description of ten possible design projects.  These projects should be suitable for an undergraduate student, or a small team of students, to complete in about one year.  The proposal should include a letter of support from an appropriate administrator of an institution providing care or education to individuals with disabilities.  The letter should certify that the institution and the university will work cooperatively on the design projects. Deadlines: Mar. 1, 2008; Sept. 15, 2008.  Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501021&govDel=USNSF_39

National Science Foundation - "Environmental Sustainability"
The Environmental Sustainability program (PD 08-7643) supports engineering research with the goal of promoting sustainable engineered systems that support human well-being and that are also compatible with sustaining natural (environmental) systems - - which provide ecological services vital for human survival.  The long-term viability of natural capital is critical for many areas of human endeavor.  This program supports engineering research that seeks to balance society’s need to provide ecological protection and maintain stable economic conditions.  There are four general research areas which are supported: Industrial Ecology; Green Engineering; Ecological Engineering; Earth Systems Engineering.   Deadline: Mar. 1, 2008; Sept. 15, 2008. Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida
The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, Inc., the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, is working to enhance access to quality health-related services for Floridians, with a particular focus on the uninsured and underserved. Community-based health clinics and outreach services is the priority focus. The greatest percentage of the Blue Foundation funding will be to identify, nurture, and sustain activities to benefit uninsured and underserved populations. The foundation awards up to $2 million annually. Requests will generally be considered for proposals from $10,000 to $100,000 each. Multi-year commitments up to three years may be made, but the total dollar request should not exceed $100,000.  Deadlines: Mar.14, 2008 and Sept.12, 2008. Go to: http://www.bluefoundationfl.com.

M·A·C AIDS Fund  -  HIV/AIDS Treatment and Prevention
The M·A·C AIDS Fund supports men, women, and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally. Since its inception, M·A·C Cosmetics has provided more than $100 million for the M·A·C AIDS Fund.  The fund has identified the following four crucial areas of need affecting the epidemic: 1) Link Between Poverty and AIDS -- Funding for basic needs such as food and housing to those living with HIV/AIDS; 2) Models of Care -- Developing hospitals and increasing the number of doctors and nurses in countries that need it the most; 3) Treatment Adherence -- Developing peer- based programs to help people adhere to their treatment regimes; and 4) Prevention -- Programs with a specific focus on high risk populations such as youth, people over 50, and African Americans. Grants are awarded to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations that are directly associated with HIV/AIDS. Typical grant size ranges between $5,000 and $25,000 each. All grants are considered one-time gifts as the fund does not consider multi-year granting. With the exception of North America-based charities, the M·A·C AIDS Fund does not accept unsolicited international grant proposals. Deadlines: Mar. 14, 2008; Jun. 13, 2008; and Sept.15, 2008.
