FAU Recovery Effort updates

Message from John Pritchett
University Provost

November 1, 2005

This past week has been exceptionally challenging for all members of the FAU family. Some have come through the week with only minimal disruptions. Others, however, have sustained tremendous physical and personal losses. This is true of our students, our staff, and our faculty.

Accordingly, as we move forward in the days and weeks ahead, I urge our administration, supervisors and faculty to exercise great flexibility and consider individual hardships faced by our faculty, staff and students.

1. Class schedules, including Lifelong Learning courses, for the rest of this week – Wednesday through Sunday – are as follows:

  • Port St. Lucie will operate under a normal schedule.
  • Jupiter, Boca Raton and Broward Campuses will operate under a normal schedule with regard to classes and labs with start times earlier than 4:00 p.m. for the rest of this week. Classes with start times of 4:00 p.m. or later will be postponed and made up at a later date.
  • It is anticipated that the regular class schedule for all campuses will resume on Monday, November 7.

2. Academic Recovery Plan

We must make every effort to make up the time lost due to both Wilma and Katrina. Toward that end, we will be convening our Academic Recovery Team (comprised of faculty, staff, and students) to develop our academic recovery plan. This group will meet later this week.

3. Tasks for today

  • Each of you has been given a damage assessment report form. We ask that you inspect your work area(s) following this meeting, complete the form as appropriate and return the form to your immediate supervisor or department chair. That individual should then transmit the forms to their building supervisor. Department chairs should provide copies to their deans.
  • Determine where and how are our people. Many of our faculty and staff are not here today. If you know anything about your colleagues who are not here, please pass that information along to your supervisor or department chair.

4. Class taught/percentage attendance

We all recognize that in the next several days, many of our classes will, due to unusual circumstances, not be taught or in those that are taught, attendance may be down.

For the next week, I have asked the deans and department chairs to compile a listing of scheduled courses not taught and a listing of attendance percentages of those that are.

5. Immediately following this meeting

  • All department chairs should meet with their dean in your normal meeting places. Further information for faculty and staff will be forthcoming from those meetings and will be communicated to you by your department chair.

6. Limited relocations of some faculty/staff

  • The Science & Engineering Building on the Boca Campus has suffered serious roof damage. This will necessitate some limited relocations of faculty and staff. Affected deans and department chairs will coordinate these moves with the Provost's Office.

In closing, please know how grateful we all are that you have come through this challenging event. For the days and weeks ahead, please use the following as our operating guidelines:

  • Let's be as flexible as possible
  • Let's be caring and available for all of our people

I can assure you that the entire Provost's Office is available to assist you in every way possible.
