Dr. Brenda Claiborne, Provost & Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Brenda J. Claiborne serves as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer of FAU. In this capacity, she provides overall leadership to the University’s academic programs and also holds the rank of Professor of Biological Sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science with a joint appointment in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.

Before coming to South Florida, Dr. Claiborne was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New Mexico. The College  served 7,500 students through 103 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, 20 departments, 4 museums and 20 research centers and institutes. She was also a Professor in the Department of Neurosciences in UNM’s School of Medicine. Prior to moving to UNM in 2007, she was Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She also was founding Director of the Institute for Aging Research at UTSA.

Dr. Claiborne has a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of California/Berkeley, a master’s degree in biology from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of California/San Diego.
