Notable Accomplishments

• Elevated FAU’s academic standards, resulting in stricter admissions criteria, higher retention rates and improved time-to-degree

• Enhanced academic resources to promote student success

• Launched Phase One of Innovation Village, a housing-recreation-retail complex on the Boca Raton campus

• Established four-year medical education program, an outgrowth of FAU’s partnership with the University   Miami Miller School of Medicine

• Increased focus on research, with the result that FAU was granted “High Research Activity” status by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

• Established the Center for Ocean Energy Technology, which has the mission of harnessing the power of Florida’s strong offshore currents to generate electricity for land use without harming the environment

• Established the Center of Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology, which has the mission of discovering valuable new pharmaceutical agents in the ocean

• Took a leadership role in securing more than $80 million to fully acquire the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute as a unit of FAU

• Opened the Scripps Research Institute’s Florida facility on the Jupiter campus to foster development of the bio-tech research sector in South Florida

• Partnered with the Max Planck Society to establish its first U.S. research center on the Jupiter campus

• Helped raise more than $120 million through donations, pledges and matching grants

• Negotiated a contract with Clearwire Corporation to fund a comprehensive strategic academic enhancement initiative aimed at helping students achieve success, updating technology, supporting faculty research and providing additional rewards to faculty. The Clearwire lease is expected to bring up to $173 million to FAU over the next 30 years.

• Presided over the largest expansion of facilities in FAU history, with more than $250 million in construction projects university-wide

• Signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment  and established  "Mission Green," a campaign to promote sustainability through education, operations and community engagement

• Presided over the creation of FAU’s first comprehensive strategic plan, which will guide the growth of the university through 2013
