Happy Black History Month!

Happy Black History Month!

Last week, our nation kicked off Black History Month, the annual celebration of African-American history and culture. From STEM subjects to the arts, athletics to education, African Americans have had a tremendous impact on our country. One month out of the year hardly seems like enough to honor pioneers like Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who helped NASA launch John Glenn into space; military heroes like the Tuskegee Airmen, who helped the U.S. win World War II; inspirational writers like Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes and Toni Morrison; educators like Marietta Cochran Mischia and Vera Legrier Wilson, the first two African-American students to graduate from FAU in 1965; and innovators like alumnus Mark Dean, chief engineer of the team that designed the original IBM PC.

FAU has a number of Black History Month events taking place across our campuses, including discussions, musical performances, trivia, the Eighth Annual Hair and Fashion Show, the Black History Cookout, and more. Click here to view the full schedule of events. I encourage everyone to take part in the #BlackHistoryMonth festivities and celebrate African Americans’ many contributions to our nation and the world.
