Criminal Investigations UnitThe Criminal Investigations Unit is comprised of one Commander, two Detectives, and one Criminal Intelligence Analyst. The Investigations Unit handles the following, but not limited to, types of crimes: Narcotics, Sexual Assaults, Fraud, Forgery, Computer Crimes, Arson, Robbery, Stalking, Harassment, Battery, Domestic Violence, and Larceny.
The patrol officer will be the first responder to a serious crime and the investigators, who are highly trained and knowledgeable, will work the case to improve the solvability.
An Investigator(s) is available 24 hours a day in order to provide expertise, guidance, and assistance. On major/serious cases, Investigators and the Analyst, come in to work during their off-duty hours to handle investigations requiring immediate attention.
Within the Criminal Investigations Unit is the Evidence Custodian, who is overseen by the Investigations Unit Commander. The Evidence Custodian is accountable for preserving the chain-of-custody and security of hazardous and nonhazardous evidence received from law enforcement personnel.
The Evidence Custodian receives, logs, maintains appropriate records, inventories, releases documents and issues evidence for the purpose of performing laboratory tests or providing testimony in court. The Evidence Custodian conducts needs assessments; updates and implements various guidelines, procedures, and formats required to accommodate legislative changes impacting submissions or release of evidence, and takes the necessary preparation for legal disposals.
