Getting a personalized FAU plate takes just a few extra steps. Simply fill out the application and submit it to your local county tax collector's office. The application will be reviewed and approved by the state to ensure that no obscene or objectionable words or phrases are being used. If it's accepted, you should be able to pick up the new plate at your county tax collector's office in about 45 days. You'll need to surrender your old plate at that time. The personalized plate cost a small yearly, in addition to regular renewal and the FAU specialty plate fee.
Birthdays, holidays, special days...you can celebrate with the plate every day. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles has authorized the issuance of specialty license plate gift certificates. This new program allows anyone to purchase an FAU specialty license plate as a gift for a motor vehicle registrant living in Florida.
How it works: Upon payment of the annual use fee, a gift certificate may now be purchased at an authorized motor vehicle office (e.g., state motor vehicle office, local tax collector office, or a licensed tag agent) for the FAU specialty license plate. At the time of purchase, a receipt will be provided and a credit will be issued in the name of the gift recipient, which can then be redeemed by the recipient at the time the specialty license plate is purchased.
You do not have to purchase and redeem the certificate at the same office. The gift certificate is not required to be presented to redeem the credit, just proper identification (i.e. Florida driver’s license or ID card). Once a gift certificate is purchased, the $25 fee is given to the University's scholarship fund; therefore, refunds are not available for gift certificates.
Please remember that in Florida, most registrations are renewed on the birth date of the registrant, so these gift certificates can also be a great birthday gift.
