[ Program Description ]
For over a decade, the FAU Peace Studies program has brought together students, faculty, and community members to explore pathways to peace and the processes of peacebuilding. As an interdisciplinary program, Peace Studies draws from a broad range of fields: anthropology, literary studies, political science, communication, history, ethics, social work and many more. Peace Studies is designed to complement a traditional major in any field. Peace Studies students take five courses from a set of curricula approved by the Program faculty committee. The Peace Studies Program at Florida Atlantic University is committed to the extensive investigation and understanding of the causes of peace from a multidisciplinary perspective. The Program invites the active participation of students at all academic levels as well as the broader community.
Most courses come from the home college of Peace Studies, the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. At graduation, students receive a certificate in Peace Studies that is noted on their academic record along with their major. Graduates enter employment like law, international relations, social and community work, and education.
Our curriculum and community outreach programs continue to evolve and expand, but our mission is always the same: we explore the meaning of peace and the paths to/of peace. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said,”Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”
Peace Studies invites the community to join FAU faculty and students in their ongoing work of studying and making peace. The Peace Studies Program also offers a broad range of lectures, workshops, research conferences, and other activities outside of the classroom such as the Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life community outreach program, talks by prominent peacemakers, and related workshops. Thousands of people have attended our events during our first 10 years, and we expect to continue this tradition in our second decade.
Whether as a student or community supporter, we invite you to become a part of Peace Studies.
