Expanding Degree Programs
in Education
New Opportunities in
Early Child Care and Environmental Education
Florida
Atlantic
University
’s
primary mission is to provide educational opportunities for
students in the classroom. In conjunction with this,
FAU’s College of Education has created two unique
degree programs, a master’s degree in environmental
education and a bachelor’s degree in early care and
education.
The new
36-credit, interdisciplinary master’s degree program
in environmental education provides students with the
opportunity to incorporate environmentally related courses
offered by all 10 FAU colleges, and includes opportunities
to apply academic theory to practical experiences with
children in the classroom, as well as on-site at the Pine
Jog Environmental Education Center, a 135-acre natural
preserve in the heart of suburban Palm Beach
County.
Students
have a choice of four tracks for elective concentrations,
including environmental education plus middle grades
general science for certified (elementary) teachers;
environmental education for certified (middle/high)
teachers and non-formal (center) educators; environmental
education for sustainable planning educators; and
environmental education for center
administrators.
The
College also is offering a new bachelor’s degree
program in early childhood education this fall. The
bachelor of early care and education (BECE) is designed for
educators of young children from birth to five years of
age. It was created through the collective vision of early
childhood community leaders, donors, child advocates and
representatives from Palm Beach Community College, in
collaboration with FAU's early childhood education faculty
and staff.
“The
BECE is the result of years of dedication and perseverance
on behalf of the early childhood community,” said Dr.
Nancy Brown, director of the Center for Early Childhood
Education, Research and Community Partnerships in
FAU’s College of Education. Brown noted that
the degree program provides a professional career
pathway. Students with associate of science degrees
in early childhood education, as well as all other
interested and qualified candidates, are encouraged to
apply.
The new
degree program prepares educators to teach, lead and gain
experience with infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and
includes both theory and practical classroom instructional
strategies. Students in the program learn to teach
children with a range of skills and abilities, including
young children with special needs. Coursework
addresses child development, the creation of a high-quality
curriculum and learning environment, and how to work
successfully with parents, families and communities.
Additionally, students learn to develop children’s
innate talents and strengths; to include children from all
cultural, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds; and to
provide children with the math, literacy and social skills
necessary for future school success.
Whether it
is working with tiny tots or applying academic theory to
the classroom experience, FAU provides a wide variety of
opportunities that help students make their educational
dreams reality.

Student Organization
Golden Key International Honour Society
The Golden Key is a world renowned collegiate honor society with approximately 360 chapters.
Chapters are housed in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, United Arab
Emirates and the United States.
The organization recognizes outstanding academic performance and promotes altruistic acts
through community service. For example, they are in the planning stages for an event that
encourages literacy by the means of dressing up as a character and reading to grade school
children.
They have also become involved with a program known as Binki Patrol, which produces
blankets for children that had endured traumatic events. Students do not necessarily have to be
members to attend meetings and/or participate in making a difference in the community.
However, membership is through invitation only. Sophomore, junior, and senior students ranking
in the top 15% of their class are invited. Upon joining, students are made available to a plethora
of scholarships and graduate school networking.
Meetings generally take place two times a month. For inquiries, feel free to contact Kevin (kdietri3@fau.edu) or Carranda (ckistler@fau.edu).
