Student Organization

Mission Green Student Coalition

Coming to the Boca Raton campus this month, is the newly developed Mission Green Student Coalition!   The purpose of this organization is to encourage and enlighten the student body on issues of environmental sustainability awareness both locally and abroad.   Along with being aware of the world-wide movement to “go green”, students will also become acutely interested in what is being done with eco-friendly practices here on campus.   From the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.) Gold Certification of our Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing to the current construction and planning of our newly developing L.E.E.D. Silver Certified College of Engineering to be completed in 2010, students will be able to see first hand how FAU has made a commitment to resolving and helping our climate crisis.   It will be a “green” building from its inception.

Some of the projects and invitations will include:

1. Plant trees and beach clean-ups
2. Fundraise of sustainable structures and projects
3. Guest speakers from around the state speak about environmental
    protection and global warming crisis
4. Environmental activism both on a state and national level

whatever it is your student is interested in, this club will tailor his/her interests to help further the expansion and popularity of this great organization, the Mission Green Student Coalition.

OWL PARENT ASSOCIATION

Dear Owl Parent,

FAU is embarking on a new venture in starting the Owl Parent Association.   Our goal is to provide parents with the information they need to support their college students, and an opportunity to connect with other FAU parents.

The Owl Parent Association is proud to announce the following parents have agreed to serve on the Parental Advisory Board: Allison Underwood, Jack and Arlene Halsey, John Williams, Leroy Carter, Linda Herman, Lori Martin, Martha Patrick, and Darlene Geiger.

By joining the Owl Parent Association, you can become a part of this new and exciting, volunteer-driven organization.   We would like to gain support of all parents and provide opportunities for parents of FAU students to develop a closer relationship with FAU.

We are here to support you, just as you are supporting your students during their FAU college experience.   For further details on joining the Parents Association, please go to our website www.fau.edu/parents or e-mail clynch12@fau.edu.

Sincerely,

Owl Parent Advisory Board

Question of the Month

Owl vs Flex Bucks

FOR PARENTS…

For additional flexibility to any meal plan or simply on its own, you may purchase OWL Bucks.

OWL Bucks is a pre-paid declining balance account that is accepted at many of our on campus retailers. OWL Bucks are accepted at the FAU Bookstore, FAU Pharmacy, Starbucks, Einstein’s, The Hub, Coyote Jack’s the Center Marketplace, all FAU Outtakes Convenience Stores and the Breezeway Food Court, which includes Wendy’s, Quiznos, Chick N Grill, Jow Jing, Mamma Leone’s and Salsarita’s.

Flex Bucks come with select meal plans and can only be used in all dining retailers. Additionally, they expire at the end of each semester. Owl Bucks can be used in all dining retailers as well the other retailers listed above and do not expire. They carry over from semester to semester and only expire after twelve consecutive months of inactivity. Parents, Owl Bucks either on their own or coupled with a Meal Plan gives you the reassurance that your student doesn’t run out of funds on campus and that the monies you have designated for campus purchases such as food, textbooks, medications and other items is really going towards what you have intended it for.

FAU Announcement
Research on Climate Change Impacts Policy
FAU study advices Florida leaders on global warming

Leading researchers at Florida Atlantic University recently released a study recommending that the State of Florida adopt a series of policy programs as a result of climate change.

The study, conducted by the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) in FAU’s College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs and the project’s sponsor, the National Commission on Energy, focuses on state adaptation policies needed as Florida faces the impacts of global warming.

Important findings from the FAU study call for major state environmental, growth management and public infrastructure decision making processes to be adjusted so they are responsive to future climate change impacts. Key findings of the FAU report were included by Florida Governor Charlie Crist’s Climate and Energy Action Team when they adopted the adaptation section of their final report.

The project was inspired by the growing recognition that Florida is on the front line of the consequences of climate change, especially the likelihood of significant sea level rise, the possibility of hurricanes of greater intensity, and the likelihood of more severe droughts and periods of torrential rains.

“The goal of our study is to help the State of Florida adapt, in the most effective way possible, to climate change impacts that are now inevitable,” said Jim Murley, director of FAU’s Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, and leader of this study.  “These approaches must be comprehensive and strategic, not piecemeal and episodic.  Governor Crist and other leaders have rightly identified adapting to climate change as one of the State’s greatest challenges — we look forward to working with the State to protect our people, natural splendor and economic livelihood.  There is real work to be done.”

FAU’s research was supported by a grant from the National Commission on Energy Policy, a project of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

“FAU will continue to research how Florida can be a leader in providing guidance to other states on how best to put in place workable solutions that will help communities adapt to future climate change impacts,” said Murley.
