Minutes

I. Welcome

10:05    Call to Order by Christine Lynch, Associate Director of New Student and Owl Family Programs.

II. Introductions

10:07    Small group introductions.   Everyone introduced themselves, where they were from, and their students attending FAU.

III. Purpose of the Association

10:11    The mission of the Owl Parent Association is to provide open communication between Florida Atlantic University parents, students, faculty and staff in all facets of academic and university life.   The Association will collaborate with the University and students in enhancing students’ life on campus through recruitment of new students, planning and participating in events, and fundraising.

            The purpose is to provide opportunities for parents of Florida Atlantic University   students to develop a closer relationship with FAU.

            Help parents gain a better knowledge of FAU so they may become informed advocates in their own communities.

            Act as a liaison to help parents learn more about the University and how they can contribute to the success of the University, including but not limited to:

§          Orientation

§          Move-In

§          Parent and Family Weekend

§          Admissions Open Houses

Assist the University with selected fundraising initiatives.

Assist the University with enrollment initiatives.

10:15    Dr. King, Dean of Students and Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, introduce himself.   He pointed out the importance of having committed parents to help throughout the development of their students while at FAU.

All attendees were Florida residents.   We had 2 pairs of FAU Alumni.  

IV. “Words of the Wise” brainstorming activity

10:17    Parents broke down into 2 groups, 1 st time college experience parents and parents that already have students in college.

            Information parents still want to know or would like to see:

§          Scholarships

§          More information on bright future/Florida Pre-Paid

§          Central location for information about FAU

§          Parents would like to have random Resident Assistant (RA) room check

§          Payment procedure (before Orientation, where can parents go to in order to figure out all the payments)

§          Better way of making payments

§          Sometimes parents do not know if the payment went through or not.   Electronic check payment does not work.

§          FERPA form (even when you have it notarized, you still need to come face to face and talk to the Registrar’s Office which is not feasible for parents that do not live in the area)

§          Navigation process on the FAU website is not clear

§          Parents would like to have a Parent Manual/Guide at Orientation

§          Bookstore payment

§          Living expenses (how much money are students expected to use - à Christine Lynch pointed out that Housing has a breakdown of expenses on their website)

§          Meal plans should be roll over

§          Flex bucks should be roll over

§          Parents want to be able to track down how many meals/flex bucks the students have left

§          Passport to FAU was very beneficial

§          Homecoming: Parents would like to have a table for OPA to fundraise/recruit

§          Option of ordering course catalogue

§          For next meeting, parents would like to have other FAU officials (e.g. Registrar’s) present

§          Adjustments

§          Friends

§          Budgeting

§          Jobs on campus

§          Personality

§          Student changes

§          Security

§          Network

Where do we go from here?

§          Parent to parent brochure

§          Network: the possibility of prospective students to contact the OPA

§          Advertise the message board more!

§          Include a delegate from the OPA to speak for 10/15 minutes and share her/his experience with the parents of incoming freshmen at the Orientations.

Currently the OPA has 33 registered families

The next meeting’s location will be during Homecoming on November 8 at 10 a.m.
