A Mindful Approach to Food and Body

Healthier U is a healthy lifestyle program for students who struggle with weight and overeating. The program takes a holistic mindful and gentle approach, and includes various components to help support you in your journey towards a healthier you.healthier u

Wondering if Healthier U is right for you? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does your eating feel out of control?
  • Do you think about your food and body for the majority of the day?
  • Are you concerned about how your weight affects your health?
  • Are you a frequent dieter?
  • Are you an emotional eater?
  • Does your weight influence your mood?
  • Do you feel ashamed or self-conscious about your weight?
  • Do you want to incorporate physical activity in your life but don't know how?
  • Do you have a negative perception towards exercise and dread engaging in physical activity?
  • Are you interested in getting support from others in reaching your healthy lifestyle goals?

If you answered yes to some of these questions, you may be a good fit for the Healthier U program.

The Healthier U Program Includes:

During this consultation, you will be asked about your goals for the program and your history with food and body. You will also fill out questionnaires to determine if this program is right for you.

Meet with a medical provider to make sure your physical health is where it needs to be for you to participate in the program. After obtaining initial clearance, you will meet with your medical provider for follow-up appointments as needed. Both your Medical Provider and Registered Dietitian will help you to see changes in your health as you progress through the program.

As part of the program, you will meet with our Registered Dietitian for nutrition education and support. The frequency of your appointments will be determined on an individual basis. To provide a hands-on, practical approach, our Registered Dietitian may also offer grocery shopping trip/tours and group lunches to cultivate mindful eating from time to time.

Finding appropriate and enjoyable ways to increase physical activity is an important part of achieving balance. In order to facilitate this process, you will meet with a team member at Campus Recreation to explore movement options that are suited for you.

Weekly educational support groups facilitated by our team members are offered at Owls Care Health Promotion. These are designed to give you the opportunity to receive support from peers and provide support to those who may be sharing some of your experiences. The support groups also include a short educational component to help you integrate all of the pieces of the program.

Counseling services are available to those participating in the program as a way to work on individual issues that might be barriers to a healthier life. These services are optional and you may choose whether or not to participate in them. Members of the Healthier U team are also available help you determine if these services may be beneficial for you.
