PARENT’S NEWSLETTER

October 2007

A Message from Dr. Larry F. Lemanski, Vice President for Research

On behalf of the Division of Research at Florida Atlantic University, it is my privilege to share with you some of the exciting research activities that have been taking place throughout our University. From receiving our Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology to being selected as one of a few universities in the country to join IBM’s Latin American (LA) Grid, FAU is breaking ground on a host of fronts. Our many talented faculty, students and staff are receiving much-deserved attention for their numerous contributions and innovations which have helped to make us a hub of scientific discovery in South Florida.

FAU is also home to the Center of Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology and the Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. These Centers are designing technologies to explore the sea, discovering new medicines from the sea and developing new therapeutics for cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, arthritis and age-related macular degeneration. The Centers are also contributing to Florida’s economic growth by creating spin-off companies and training a highly skilled biotechnology workforce.

Over the past year, we have celebrated several key events including the opening of our 40,000-square-foot marine science building located at the world-renowned Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) in Ft. Pierce. This state-of-the-art facility is temporarily housing the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies (TPIMS) and is providing us with enhanced opportunities for joint research collaborations. Furthermore, following our decade-long marine education and research partnership, HBOI will merge with FAU later this year.

The 2007-2008 appropriations bill passed by the Florida legislature in May will support many of our important research programs including $4.7 million in recurring funding to enable the FAU/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to expand to a four-year program, and $6 million to assist in research taking place in partnership with TPIMS, as well as other initiatives. Support of this magnitude breaks new ground and enhances the strong connection between faculty research and local, regional and state-wide economic development.

The state-wide Centers of Excellence program provides an unprecedented window of opportunity for FAU faculty to further compete across cutting-edge research areas. Other exciting collaborations include our work with Scripps Florida in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes research.

In addition, a state-of-the-art 530-bed hospital will be constructed on our campus in Boca Raton; Boca Raton Community Hospital will operate the community/university-affiliated teaching hospital that will serve as the primary teaching hospital for our new, four-year University of Miami Miller School of Medicine program leading to the M.D. degree at FAU as well as our nursing programs.  This facility will provide FAU with an environment that is outstanding not only to teaching and patient care, but also for state-of-the art clinical research here in South Florida.

I hope you can see from this brief overview that FAU is well on its way to becoming a fully engaged research institution of the highest caliber, tackling problems facing this region, the nation and the world.

Sincerely,

Larry F. Lemanski, Ph.D.

OFFICE OF THE MONTH

Counseling Center

Counseling Services are confidential and FREE, for all Florida Atlantic University credit bearing students. Student’s who apply for services will be assigned to a counselor who will meet with them to assess their concerns and develop a plan. In an emergency, students will be seen immediately. Florida Atlantic University's Counseling Center exists within the Division of Student Affairs.  There are three FAU Counseling centers on different campuses.  Our hours of operation and services differ slightly in order to meet the different needs of each campus.

The Counseling Center’s mission is to support students in identifying and achieving their educational goals through psychological, psychiatric, and psycho-educational assistance.  We are here to assist students, identify, and develop positive traits which will help them pursue personal, social, and work responsibilities.   Help may be requested by students dealing with problems concerning relationships, stress, adjusting to college, concentration, disabilities, esteem, eating, body image, alcohol and drugs, cultural, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety, stress, and unwanted sexual experiences, etc.

The Counseling Center can be of considerable value to students who feel irritable, angry, unloved, guilty, socially disconnected, and hopeless. And it can be of value when student’s relationships become troubled and stressful.

Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provide professional therapeutic services and assistance to students whose personal difficulties and learning problems interfere with their ability to benefit from academic and extracurricular experiences here at FAU. Counseling is held in strict confidence in keeping with accepted professional practice and Florida statutes. For more information check out the Counseling Center’s websites.
