2017 Summer Upgrades at the Davie Campus

As part of OIT’s refresh program, Broward Technology Services (OIT-BTS) has upgraded several e-classrooms, one videoconference classroom, and several computer lab facilities at the Davie Campus. The upgrades, which took place during the summer break, provided seven different facilities with better equipment and/or new technology. The upgrades will improve the learning environment for the students and professors who use those facilities. These upgrades are in accordance with Florida Atlantic University's Strategic Plan (Goal 5: Building a State-of-the-Art Information Technology Environment).

The upgrades allow users to use the technology in those facilities in a more seamless manner, thus enhancing the teaching and learning process. For example, the technology equipment added in several of the classrooms will accept different forms of inputs, switching between devices, visualizing brighter and larger text/images, among other improvements.

The following is a summary of the improvements:

LA-234 | Davie Campus

e-Classrooms | LA-233, LA-234 & LA-339

These classrooms received an overall system re-configuration and upgrade, which included the addition of a new teaching podium, as well as the replacement of the computer, screens, projector, etc. In summary, the following items were enhanced/replaced:

  • Teaching Station (streamline design)
  • Digital Media Presentation System (multiple digital input/output formats)
  • High lumens projector (5500 Lumens)
  • Larger projector screen (wide screen format)
  • Desktop computer (robust processor, sold state drive, Windows)
  • 24” Touch screen monitor
DW-108 | Davie Campus

Videoconference Classroom | DW-108

Several items were upgraded in this room, such as the wide-angle cameras, or the document camera. Besides that, a new lecture capture system was added to the classroom, and the videoconference system was reconfigurated. In summary, the following items were enhanced/replaced:

  • Digital media cards (input/output 4k cards)
  • Mediasite (lecture capture device)
  • Wide-angle presenter camera
  • Wide-angle student camera
  • 4K Compatible scalers
  • High-end document camera
Davie Main Open Computer Lab | Davie Campus

Open Computer Labs | LA-303, LIB-103, & SU-101F

The Main Open Computer Lab (LA-303) was renovated with 11 new computers (9 PC and 2 Macs). In addition, an Epson Expression 12000XL was added in the lab. This is a large-format scanner (12.2" x 17.2") with superior performance for graphic artists, and graphic arts applications. The scanner can do 2400 x 4800 dpi resolution scanning. It has a ColorTrue™ II imaging system, and Epson technology for enhanced colours and pinpoint registration. Furthermore, it comes with the Epson Easy Photo Fix® technology, which offers one-touch restoration for faded color photos and negatives, plus automatic dust removal.

The operating system of all the open computer labs (LA-303, LIB-103, and SU-101F) was also upgraded to Windows 10 (for the PCs) and to Sierra (for the Macs). New scanners were also added in all the open computer labs. Similarly, more accessibility workstations for students with disabilities were created.

Instructional Computer Labs | LA-340

Broward Technology Services also completed the renovation of the Arts and Letters instructional computer lab (LA-340) with the renovation of all the computers, replacing them with 20 new Apple iMacs. These machines have 16 GB of RAM, 1TB of hard drive space, and a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5 processors. All run Sierra as their operating system. In terms of the software, all these new machines have now the new Adobe Creative Cloud Suite CC 2017.
