Ivan AristizabalAs in previous years, FAU's university-wide program "Safety Month" offered events and activities on all campuses with information on healthy lifestyles, personal property security, CPR, defensive driving, fire prevention, alcohol and drug abuse, date rape, and hurricane preparedness and recovery, among other topics.

This year, OIT-BCS joined the Broward campuses' activities with a presentation on "Personal Privacy Concerns in Online Social Networking Sites." The presentation, which was prepared and delivered by Technical Services Manager Ivan Aristizabal, took place on Tuesday, September 15 on the Davie campus. It was broadcast via the university's videoconference system to the other FAU campuses.

Ivan discussed basic aspects users should be aware of when using online social networking sites. He also showed participants how to set up and lock the privacy settings of a Facebook account. Facebook is currently the most popular social networking site in the world. Some of Ivan's recommendations include:

  • Lock down your profile so that it is only accessible to your friends. A social network site like Facebook has more than 300 million people who can potentially access your personal information.
  • Create groups within your friends list to further filter information.
  • Never publish your credit card information on Facebook or any other social network sites.
  • Don't disclose personal information that can be used to access accounts (e.g., answers to secret questions).
  • Be careful what you share and always be aware of what others are sharing about you.
  • Always monitor what your kids do online.
