Biohazardous Spill Kit
(Spill kit should be ready to use at all times)
- Appropriate disinfectant such as 10% bleach
- Paper Towels
- Biohazard bags
- Tongs or forceps to pick up broken or sharp items
- Dust pan and scooper
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): gloves, gown, goggles or face shield

Spill Clean-up Procedures
- Clear spill area of all personnel; secure area; warn others not to go into contaminated area.
- Remove any contaminated clothing; place in biohazard bag.
- Wait for aerosols to settle before entering spill area.
- Put on appropriate PPE.
- Encircle spill with disinfectant; cover with paper towels; soak paper towels with disinfectant.
- Place spill materials in biohazard bag for disposal.
- Apply disinfectant again to area; swipe clean.

Exposure Procedures
- Immediately wash affected area with soap and water or use eyewash for eye exposure.
- Report incident to your supervisor or lab manager.
- Seek medical attention, if necessary.

Large Spills or Aerosol Release of highly Infectious Material
- Hold your breath and leave area immediately; try to close doors as you leave.
- Refer to Evacuation Procedures.
- Remove contaminated clothing; avoid contact with others.
- Follow exposure procedures.
- Do not enter spill area until cleared to do so.
- Do not attempt to clean spills unless specifically trained to do so.
- Police will notify emergency personnel, if needed.
