Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College awarded nearly $15,000 in scholarships to 10 students in support of their summer research at FAU and Scripps Florida. The summer research scholarship program encourages students to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the FAU-Scripps-Max Planck Florida life science hub located at FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter.
“Getting an opportunity to start research as early as my freshmen year at prestigious institutions right in our backyard has been incredible. Not only am I learning about my interests in the classroom, but I am also applying them,” said Kreesha Shah, a rising sophomore who will be researching sleep mechanisms in fruit flies with FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science associate professor Alex Keene, Ph.D., and William Ja, Ph.D., associate professor at Scripps Florida.
Developing each student’s ability to conduct original, innovative research is an important part of the Wilkes Honors College’s mission.
“The live-learn community of the Honors College fosters intellectual and personal growth encouraging students to take responsibility for their own education,” said Jeffrey Buller, Ph.D., dean of the Honors College. “With our college being in walking distance to these incredible scientific institutes, the environment for independent research possibilities are endless.”
The research summer scholarship recipients were Adya Ali (Scripps with Sathyanarayanan Puthanveettil, Ph.D.); Stacy Cabral (Scripps Florida with Damon Page, Ph.D.); Christie-Anne Estrada (FAU with Gregg Fields, Ph.D.); Lauren Fremont (FAU with Jon Moore, Ph.D.); Isaac Hackett (FAU with Gregg Fields, Ph.D.); Viktoriya Kozlova (FAU with Greg Macleod, Ph.D.); Lauren Lowy (FAU with Ashley Kennedy, Ph.D.); Nicole McRostie (FAU with Julie Earles, Ph.D.); Kreesha Shah (FAU and Scripps Florida with Alex Keene, Ph.D., and Bill Ja, Ph.D.) and Rubens Tavora (Scripps Florida with Brock Grill, Ph.D.).
