    A research paper or composition at the advanced level in music history, music theory or composition.

  • Commercial Music Internship

  • Prerequisite: Commercial Music Department approval
    Internship that reflects the student's track with in the Commercial Music Degree. Credits will vary depending upon content of internship, to be determined by the Commercial Music advisors.

  • Music Theory Fundamentals
  • (MUT 1001) 2 credits
  • An introduction to the foundations of music notation, music theory, and sight singing in preparation for MUT 1111 and MUT 1241.
  • Music Theory I
  • (MUT 1111) 3 credits
  • An introduction to the foundations of music theory including elementary sight singing, dictation and four-part writing of the Common Practice Period.
  • Music Theory II
  • (MUT 1112) 3 credits
  • Prerequisite: MUT 1111 with a grade of "C" or higher
    A continuation of MUT 1111 including writing and analysis of all diatonic vocabulary devices of the Common Practice Period and an introduction of the chromatic vocabulary through the study of secondary dominant function.
  • Sight Singing and Ear Training I
  • (MUT 1241) 1 credit
  • Development of aural skills through the study of sight singing, musical dictation and keyboard exercises.
  • Sight Singing and Ear Training II
  • (MUT 1242) 1 credit
  • Prerequisite: MUT 1241 with a grade of "C" or higher
    A continuation of MUT 1241.

  • (MUT 2116) 3 credits
  • Prerequisite: MUT 1112 with a grade of "C" or higher
    A continuation of MUT 1112 including an in-depth study, with emphasis on part-writing, of chromatic devices of the Common Practice Period including modulation.
  • Music Theory IV

  • Prerequisite: MUT 2116 with a grade of "C" or higher
    A continuation of MUT 2116 including continued study of chromatic devices of the Common Practice Period, with emphasis on analysis and study of chromaticism.
  • Sight Singing and Ear Training III

  • Prerequisite: MUT 1242 with a grade of "C" or higher
    A continuation of MUT 1242.
  • Sight Singing and Ear Training IV

  • Prerequisite: MUT 2246 with a grade of "C" or higher
    A continuation of MUT 2246.
  • Introduction to
    Commercial Arranging

  • (MUT 2341) 2 credits
  • Prerequisite: MUT 1112
    An introduction to harmony and arranging as used in commercial music. Course examines basic skills and techniques that translate to all commercial genres.
  • Jazz Improvisation I
  • (MUT 2641) 2 credits
  • Prerequisite: MUT 2116 or permission of instructor
    An intensive study of jazz improvisation through classroom performance on voice or instrument. Emphasis will be placed on scales, chords, modes, harmonic progressions and musical patterns which are common to the jazz repertoire.
  • Jazz Improvisation II
  • (MUT 2642) 2 credits
  • Prerequisite: MUT 2641 or permission of instructor
    Continuation of the work of the prerequisite course.
  • Preparatory Music Theory I
  • (MUT 3012) 1 credit
  • This course is designed to meet the Florida State Music Teachers Association guidelines for levels one through three. Students will work on appropriate material during class and will be taught the necessary tools to gain access to understanding the use of theory in appreciation of music.
  • Preparatory Music Theory II
  • (MUT 3013) 1 credit
  • Prerequisite: MUT 3012 or permission of instructor
    This course is designed to meet the Florida State Music Teachers Association guidelines for levels four through six. Students will work on appropriate material during class and will be taught the necessary tools to gain access to understanding the use of theory in appreciation of music.
  • Preparatory Music Theory III
  • (MUT 4014) 1 credit
  • Prerequisite: MUT 3013 or permission of instructor
    This course is designed to meet the Florida State Music Teachers Association guidelines for levels seven through nine. Students will work on appropriate material during class and will be taught the necessary tools to gain access to understanding the use of theory in appreciation of music.
