FAU’s Center for Teaching and Learning Earns National Outstanding Learning Center of the Year Award

BOCA RATON, Fla. (October 17, 2013) – Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has been named the 2013 Frank L. Christ Outstanding Learning Center by the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA). Just two years after opening on the Boca Raton campus of FAU, the CTL received the highest award given for excellence as a learning center in higher education.

“FAU has created a robust and exciting place where we continually evolve to better support everyone within our community – from undergraduate and graduate students, to faculty and staff, from our struggling students to our top scholars,” said Jennifer Bebergal, director of student retention at FAU. “We have created a home for learning and success on campus – and with our new eLearning support programs – anywhere in the world.”

The Center was recognized based on its overall mission, staffing, members of the university community served, programs offered, and training and evaluation of programs. In 2012-13, FAU’s CTL served 14,923 students through 67,713 unique visits for academic support. In addition, 773 students participated in undergraduate research and inquiry, student learning communities, and related programs throughout the Center. Faculty from each of FAU’s 10 colleges also participated in the Faculty Learning Community program and other initiatives to enhance teaching.

The CTL provides a variety of opportunities to help students and faculty excel, such as through the Math Learning Center; the Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS); the University Center for Excellence in Writing; the Scholarship of Teaching Office; and the newly established Office for Undergraduate Research and Inquiry. The CTL’s ultimate goal is the creation of a culture of engagement, where students become fully engaged in the learning process; and where faculty from diverse disciplines can engage one another in the pedagogy of teaching, with the ultimate goal of enhancing student learning.
