FAU to Host Events in Honor of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month

BOCA RATON, FL (September 19, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University will commemorate Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month with a series of events beginning Wednesday, September 19 through Thursday, October 25 at its Boca Raton, Broward and Jupiter campuses.  Sponsored by FAU Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Involvement & Leadership, all events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

The following events will take place at FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:
Opening Ceremony
Wednesday, September 19, from noon to 1 p.m.
Traditions Plaza

 
Join the festivities as FAU launches Hispanic/Latino/a Heritage Month activities with a feast on mojo chicken, plantains, black beans and rice and cheese arepas. For more information, contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs at 561-297-3959.

 



Inaugural Hispanic Heritage Month BBQ
Thursday, September 20, beginning at 6 p.m.
Housing BBQ Pit

 
The FAU chapters of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. and Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. will host the first ever BBQ in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month with free food and music to celebrate the Hispanic culture.

 



Movie Night: 'Iron Jawed Angels'
Thursday, September 20, from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Latin Comedy Night
Thursday, October 4, from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

This event will celebrate Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month by entertaining members of the FAU community with a comedy show provided by Latin comedians. Zumba to End the Abuse

FAU Davie and Broward College Central Campus are proud to sponsor an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for largest Zumba class on a college campus. This event is being held to raise awareness and funds for domestic violence and will support the College Brides Walk (www.collegebrideswalk.com) and No More Tears (www.nmtproject.org). For more information, contact Student Involvement & Leadership at 954-236-1219. Registration is free for students with a valid ID and a minimum donation of $5 is requested for non-students.

FAU students, faculty and staff are invited to join the corn Maya and Yarnatics Club for a fun afternoon of Latin American yarn-based crafts such as Mexican yarn paintings, Guatemalan worry dolls, and Mexican ojos de Dios.
