FAU Hosts 2012 State of the University Address

BOCA RATON, FL (September 6, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University President Mary Jane Saunders delivered the 2012 State of the University address, themed “FAU 2012: Celebrating a Year of Firsts, Building Community,” on Thursday, September 6, in the Lifelong Learning Center Auditorium, Boca Raton Campus.

Emphasizing the University’s initiative to enter into mutually beneficial relationships with local businesses, Saunders said, “In the year ahead, we will continue to introduce the FAU of the 21st century to many of the business leaders in our area to help them understand how much the University can contribute to their success. We want our research and innovation to align with and inspire business growth and development.”

Addressing the 15 percent tuition increase that came in the wake of FAU’s loss of $24.7 million in state funding, she said, “Our pledge to our students is that we will work with the Trustees, the Governor, the Legislature and the Board of Governors to try to restore state funding to a level that will eliminate the need for ongoing tuition increases.”

In her address, Saunders recalled FAU’s historic year of welcoming the largest student body in its history, including the University’s first class of medical students, and the completion of the 30,000-seat FAU Stadium. She also talked about the University’s exciting future, including its growth as a leading center of education, research, creative activities and community engagement.
