FAU Hosts Fifth Annual Freshman Convocation

BOCA RATON, FL (August 19, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University will host its largest freshman class of more than 3,200 students at its fifth annual Freshman Convocation on Sunday, August 21, at 1 p.m., in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

“In addition to a record number of new freshmen, we have an incredibly strong incoming class,” says Edward Pratt, Ph.D., dean of undergraduate studies at FAU and coordinator of the event. “The number of students in our honors programs has more than doubled.”

The formality of the Freshman Convocation serves to underscore the important transition that is taking place in their lives and to extend the support of the university community to its newest members.

FAU President Mary Jane Saunders; Brenda Claiborne, Ph.D., university provost; and Student Government President Ayden Maher will welcome the freshmen in Sunday’s ceremony.

The keynote speaker at this year’s convocation will be Deborah Floyd, Ph.D., FAU’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Floyd, a professor in the College of Education with more than 35 years of experience in her field, teaches courses on leadership and student engagement. Before coming to FAU, she served as president of Prestonsburg Community College and as a senior fellow at the Association of American Colleges and Universities. She is one of the country’s foremost experts on the community college baccalaureate degree and related trends.
