FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Welcomes Robert A. Pearlman as Chief Development and Strategy Officer

BOCA RATON, Fla. (June 14, 2013) — Robert A. Pearlman of Boca Raton will join the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University as its first chief development and strategy officer.

Pearlman comes to FAU from the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, where he served as president and chief executive officer since 1993. He will be stepping down from that position at the end of June. During his tenure, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation has raised approximately $300 million. He presided over three consecutive five-year campaigns, which increased fundraising more than 15 percent per year, growing into the largest cure-related research program in the world.

“With funding from government sources becoming leaner and more targeted, it’s critical to have diversified support for research, infrastructure, clinical care, and education,” said Dr. David J. Bjorkman, M.D., M.S.P.H., dean and executive director of medical affairs for FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. “This involves partnerships with the biotechnology industry as well as a critical role for philanthropy. We are excited to have Bob join our team to spearhead these efforts.”

Pearlman will start on Monday, July 15 and will report to Bjorkman.

“I am honored to work with an outstanding leadership team to help provide the resources to grow the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine into the Dean’s vision of becoming one of the leading medical schools in the country,” said Pearlman.

Before joining the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, Pearlman was vice president of major gifts at the National United Jewish Appeal, one of the largest charities in the world when he served there from 1968 to 1984. More than 50 percent of the Appeal’s income came from major gifts, headed up by Pearlman.

After leaving the Appeal in 1984, Pearlman served as chief executive officer of the American Friends of Hebrew University, the premier institution for higher learning in Israel. He served in that capacity until 1993, when he came to South Florida to head up the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.

Pearlman was recruited to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation to increase funding for the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami, the sole beneficiary of its support. During his tenure, the Foundation and the Diabetes Research Institute experienced exponential growth, developing into one of the premier diabetes organizations and a recognized world-leader in cure-focused diabetes research.
