FAU to Host Optical Engineering Symposium

Event Commemorates William T. Rhodes, Ph.D., Contribution to Field of Optics

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 10, 2013) – Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science will host the symposium “Optical Engineering, a Journey for Better Seeing” in honor of William T. Rhodes, Ph.D., professor of electrical engineering at FAU, on Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Engineering East Alumni Hall, room 106, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

The symposium will focus on current research in the field of optics including presentations titled “Different Imaging Modalities Shedding Light on One Another,” “Overcoming Incoherence,” and “When Blurry is Better.” Optics is the branch of physics which involves the behavior and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it.

FAU’s Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, along with Angela Guzman, Ph.D., visiting research professor from the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida and Rhodes’ spouse, coordinated the event in honor of Rhodes’ contribution to the field of optics. Speakers include Christopher Beetle, Ph.D., professor of physics at FAU and renowned guest speakers in the field of optics; Gerd Häusler, Ph.D., professor of optics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany; Joseph N. Mait, Ph.D., professor specializing in optics at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory; Bahaa E. A. Saleh, Ph.D., professor at the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers in the College of Optics and Photonics of University of Central Florida; Joseph Goodman, Ph.D., William Ayer Professor Emeritus at Stanford University; Gisele Bennett, Ph.D., professor at the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory at Georgia Tech; Jorge Ojeda-Castañeda, Ph.D., professor of optics at the University of Guanajuato, Campus Irapuato-Salamanca in GJ, México; Michael T. Eismann, Ph.D., professor of optics at the Electro-Optics Sensor Technology Division at the Air Force Research Lab; and Joe Vandergracht, Ph.D., Holospex Inc. in Ellicott City, Maryland. Rhodes’ graduate students also will share their research activities, and Rhodes himself will give the closing remarks.

Rhodes has been a professor at FAU since 2005. In 1971, after completing his B.S., M.S.E.E., and Ph.D. degrees at Stanford University, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where he helped develop that university's program in optics. In 1976, he was a Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. From 1990-91, he held an appointment as the Denver Business Challenge Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research interests include optical image formation and display, diffraction theory, imaging through turbulence, and information processing.

Rhodes is coauthor of the textbook Introduction to Lasers and Their Applications, and is currently working to complete a text on the Principles of Fourier Optics. He is also the editor-in-chief for the Springer-Verlag Optical Sciences series of monographs and editor for the Springer Graduate Texts in Physics series. Between 1987 and 1993, he served as editor/editor-in-chief of Applied Optics, and between 2010 and 2011 as editor-in-chief of the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Reviews. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the SPIE and has served on the boards of both societies.
