2012 Green Gala Raises More Than $50,000 for FAU Pine Jog Environmental Education Center

BOCA RATON, FL (April 30, 2012) - Florida Atlantic University's Pine Jog Environmental Education Center recently held its annual fundraiser, the Green Gala. Generous sponsors and guests helped raise more than $50,000, and proceeds will help underwrite Pine Jog's children's programs.

Pine Jog serves more than 40,000 individuals annually, and 60 percent of them are from culturally diverse and underserved populations. Programs include summer camp scholarships to provide experiences in nature for under privileged children.

Major sponsors of the event included B&W/BE&K/CDM Team; Castle Wealth Mgmt./Divine Blalock Martin and Sellari LC; Florida Power & Light/Nextera; Tierra South Florida, Inc.; Donnell-Kay Foundation; Garden Club of Palm Beach; Jeff Koons; Karen McKinley/Merrill Lynch Palm Beach; Land Design South; Lewis, Longman, and Walker P.A.; Pirtle Construction; PNC Bank; Skanska USA Building, Inc.; Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County; Southern Waste Systems; Wantman Group; and Yeend, Castaneda & Flynn, LLP.

The gala was held at Pine Jog's LEED Gold Certified facility and included dinnerand dancing under the stars, a tribute to early environmentalist Rachel Carson, and a silent and live auction. LouGalterio acted as master of ceremonies and auctioneerwith Bob Bentz, chair of Pine Jog's Board of Directors, as honorary host of this year's event.

FAU President Mary Jane Saunders; Jennifer O'Flannery Anderson, Ph.D., vice president for community engagement and executive director of the FAU Foundation, Inc.; and Valerie J. Bristor, Ph.D., dean of FAU's College of Education, attended the event.

Special guests included State Representative Jeff Clemens; Palm Beach County CommissionerKaren Marcus; Palm Beach County School Board memberChuck Shaw; City of West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio; West Palm Beach Commissioner Sylvia Moffett; Palm Beach Gardens City Council member Marcie Tinsley; and Wayne Gent, Palm Beach County School Board superintendent.

Pine Jog's second annual Environmental Leadership awards also were announced at the Gala. Recipients included:

  • Environmental Educator of the Year - Serena Rinker, Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge
  • Environmental Education Program of the Year - Palm Beach State College's Center for Green Construction & Energy
  • Environmental Nonprofit of the Year - Everglades Foundation
  • Environmental Business of the Year - FPL/Nextera
  • Environmental Visionary of the Year - Palm Beach County Commissioner Karen Marcus
  • Lifetime Achievement Award - Nat Reed
