FAU Participates in MLK, Jr. ‘Day of Service’
BOCA RATON, FL (February 6, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University’s Weppner Center for Civic Engagement and Service participated in a “Day of Service” with 75 FAU students and staff as they volunteered with the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County in West Palm Beach and the Glades Area A.R.C in Belle Glade in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
“FAU’s desire to serve our communities empowers us to create the ‘beloved community’ that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned,” said Nori Carter, director of the Weppner Center. “As a day to encourage a society of justice, peace and harmony to be achieved through nonviolence, the MLK, Jr. ‘Day of Service’ is one of the many ways in which our students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to build bridges for and form connections with the children, families and adults in our own backyard.”
As a result of the volunteers efforts at the Homeless Coalition, 63 bags of grass and trash were collected, three gardens were built and 270 plants were planted. At the Glades Area A.R.C., six mini-vans and three buses were washed, the interior of the agency’s main building was painted and a brick walk way was restored.
