FAU Libraries Announces New
Art Installation Space at MacArthur Campus Library
Inaugural Exhibition "Lifestyles,"
by Acclaimed Artist Rosemarie Chiarlone, Features
Accompanying Audio and Visuals for an Interactive
Journey
BOCA RATON, FL (January 6, 2006) -
Florida Atlantic University Libraries announces a
new 'installation work space' for art exhibitions,
a twenty-four by twenty-four foot area, at FAU's
John D. MacArthur Campus Library, 1st floor, 5353
Parkside Drive, Jupiter. The inaugural exhibition
"Lifestyles," by nationally recognized artist
Rosemarie Chiarlone, will be on display January 3
through March 4, 2006. The exhibition is free and
open to the public.
In this exhibition, Chiarlone creates an
ironic commentary on the homeless. The fabric
chairs and benches are covered in photos of
homeless people, while the books on the table
depict their living conditions in Miami, where
Chiarlone resides. The accompanying audio and
visuals make this an intriguing and unique
experience for the viewer - an interactive, thought
provoking journey. To much acclaim, the
installation was featured in the show "Dissent:
Political Voices," at the Spaces Gallery,
Cleveland, Ohio, in April 2005.
"The new art installation space is a
significant departure for the library. By
reorganizing, we were able to free up the space and
create a dedicated area, with more of a gallery
atmosphere. This allows enough wall space and
walking room for visitors to fully enjoy the art.
The desire is to establish a destination for more
than books and computers, with the hope that the
gallery space will become a cultural site for the
students, faculty and members of the community,"
said Ethan Allen, MacArthur campus library
director.
The library has future plans, in a
designated area in the mezzanine, for a music loft
space, with comfortable seating for listening. This
may open as early as Summer 2006.
