FAU Jupiter’s Lifelong Learning Society Celebrates Winter Performing Arts Week

            JUPITER, FL (December 19, 2008) - The Lifelong Learning Society at FAU Jupiter will celebrate its Winter 2009 Performing Arts Week from January 5 - 10 with a variety of performances and lectures.  The events take place in the Lifelong Learning Complex at Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Drive, Jupiter.

Performing Arts Week includes the following events:

·         Monday, January 5, 2 p.m. - Performers Cheryl Cavendish and William Stafford, with pianist Dr. Warren Broome, will present “Great Moments from Broadway and Operetta,” including the best of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

·         Monday, January 5, 7 p.m. - Aaron Kula with members of the Klezmer Company Orchestra will play a variety of music, including tango, country, blues, classical and jazz.

·         Tuesday, January 6, 10 a.m. – Virginia Newmyer will present “The Duke and Duchess of Windsor: Glamour, Gossip and Gloom,” a one-day lecture about Edward, Prince of Wales, and his marriage to Wallis Simpson.

·         Tuesday, January 6, 7 p.m.  – Rod MacDonald and the Humdingers will present “Music Americana: The Birth of Rock and Roll,” performing songs from Count Basie’s swing and boogie-woogie, Sinatra and Big Mama Thornton.

·         Wednesday, January 7, 2 p.m. – Robert Milne presents “The History of Ragtime,” and reveals through piano and stories the history of Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Scott Joplin and others.

·         Wednesday, January 7, 8 p.m. – Dr. Irena Kofman and Andre De Groote will present a piano duet, “ Music by Schubert and Rachmaninov .”

·         Thursday, January 8, 10:45 a.m. - Alejandro Sanchez Samper will present “The Story of Tango: Music, Dance and Culture” with guest musicians and dancers.

·         Thursday, January 8, 7 p.m. - Dr. Stephen Cohen will present “The Best in Jewish Humor: A Retrospective,” as he explores Jewish life in America as it is reflected in stories and jokes.

·         Friday, January 9, 2 p.m. - Dr. Jeffrey Morton will present “Democracy and American Society” with special guest speakers Dr. David Cratis Williams and Dr. John Tomasi.

·         Saturday, January 10, 1 p.m. - Myrna Goldberger will present “The Gold Dust Twins,” a self-written, one-act play about Doris Duke and Barbara Hutton.
