FAU Libraries Host ‘Dia de
Muertos Champagne Salon’ to Raise Money to Renovate
Space for Papermaking Studio
BOCA RATON (October 15, 2010) – The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University Libraries is hosting “Dia de Muertos Champagne Salon” on Saturday, November 6, from 4 to 7:30 p.m., at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.
This fundraising event is being held to support the opening of a hand papermaking studio in FAU’s T-6 building, a former World War II barracks. The Jaffe center plans to open the studio in 2011 after renovations are completed. Classes will be open to the public.
“As
one of the three core foundations of the book arts, along with
printing and bookbinding, papermaking is the one that students
and visitors to the Jaffe center are most interested in
learning,” said Programs Coordinator John Cutrone.
“We can’t wait to be able to offer the
opportunity.”
The Jaffe center will be transformed into a festive café
to kick off an autumnal evening. Since Dia de Muertos, Mexico's
famous Day of the Dead celebration falls so close to the day of
the fundraiser, a mariachi band will kick things off and get toes
tapping. Hors d’oeuvres and a sparkling Argentinian
Chardonnay will be served to guests. There also will be readings
from autumnal books, local ghost stories and an entertaining
short video. Guests will receive a festive clay calavera,
courtesy of Convivio Bookworks’ online Convivio Book of
Days catalog, to take home. This is the second champagne
salon the center has sponsored to benefit the studio. A
similar benefit in July kicked off the fundraising and raised
about $1,700.
“Our Summertime Champagne Salon was great fun and a big success, and we're looking forward to this one being even more interesting as we add a festive Day of the Dead theme to our event,” said Cutrone. “The food and champagne will be delicious, the books made by artists will be unforgettable, and the ghost stories will give folks a very different idea of the place they call home.”
The suggested donation is $75 per person. Larger donations are encouraged. To reserve seats, e-mail jcutrone@fau.edu, or call 561-297-0455 or 561-297-0226.
