FAU to Host 'Campus Sustainability Day'

‘Green’ Events at Boca, Jupiter and Treasure Coast campuses

BOCA RATON, FL (October 21, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University will host “Campus Sustainability Day” on Wednesday, October 22 at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Treasure Coast campuses.

            The intent of “Campus Sustainability Day” is to create an interactive way to build a culture of sustainability at FAU, in which the entire university community is aware of, involved with and committed to advancing sustainability through education, operations and community engagement.

A series of environment-related activities, as well as numerous displays will be part of the day’s activities in the Breezeway of the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A 15-minute presentation by Mission Green on sustainability issues will take place, followed by free lunch sponsored by Chartwells. FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science will host a contest between students who will make smoothies using a bicycle to create energy to operate the blender. South Florida Commuter Services will be on hand to measure your carbon footprint, and the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing will provide free melanoma screenings on the second floor of the Breezeway. Other participants include FAU’s Student Government, FAU’s department of ocean engineering, FAU’s department of housing and the U.S. Green Building Council.  The A.D. Henderson University School’s chorus also will perform its “Earth Day Rap” from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in the Breezeway.

            FAU’s MacArthur campus, 5353 Parkside Drive in Jupiter, will hosts its activities from 3 to 7 p.m. on its campus breezeway. There will be an “all-around talent” vocal presentation, as well as photos with Owsley, FAU’s mascot. The Enviro-Club will present eco-friendly displays, and there will be an opportunity for students to “Pledge to Live Green.” The Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment Lecture Series will host Dr. Robert Michael Pyle from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the AD Auditorium as he discusses “Frogs, Forts and Fritillaries: The Real World as Antidote to the Extinction of Experience.”   Students will be able to watch Pixar’s latest film, “Wall-E” in the Residence Hall Courtyard at 9 p.m.

The FAU Treasure Coast campus, 500 NW California Blvd. in Port St. Lucie, also will host at Campus Sustainability Fair in the Joint Use Facility lobby from 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. There will be a series of interactive games for students, as well as a “Trash to Art” exhibit.
